- What is GPRS (2.5G)
GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service and is an extension of current GSM networks, allowing those networks to function more like the Internet.
The most important difference with the current GSM system is that data is chopped up into packages and sent. This ensures a more efficient use of the network capacity. Result: speed! The data speed on the current GSM network is now 9.6 Kb/s, while the maximum GPRS speed can be 115 Kb/s!
To be able to surf the Internet through GPRS, you need a GPRS-compatible mobile and a laptop or PDA. When those are connected, you can read and answer your e-mails or just surf while you are on the road. With GPRS you only pay for the amount of data you send or receive, the time you are on line does not count.
